May 20: Catch of the Day

Logged on Sunday May 23, 2010

Roseway left St. Croix on May 16 and headed for Bermuda with a crew of 22. Wind was good at the outset but died out en route leaving calm, peaceful seas and not much to do by fish! The cook was thrilled when this big boy was delivered to her galley providing a fresh and fantastic dinner!

We’ll see what else the sea shares with us as we cross the Gulf Stream and head for Boston.

May 14: Transit Prep Underway

Logged on Friday May 14, 2010

It’s 48 hours until departure! Roseway leaves the dock in St. Croix on Sunday morning May 16 and it is now countdown time. Crew are busily repairing, cleaning, organizing, stowing, cooking, and saying goodbyes. With 22 souls on board, Roseway will depart for Bermuda and then on to Boston, arriving end of May.  Like our falcon friend who lives in our cross-trees for much of the year here in Gallows Bay, we migrate north for the summer season. It’s a bittersweet time of year–ready to get going and set our sites on new ports but sad to leave our island community behind. And for some crew, this is the last transit aboard Roseway–for others who have just arrived, it’s only the beginning.

May 9: Final Tapas Sail: A Glorious Evening

Logged on Monday May 10, 2010

For the final Tapas sail of the season, Roseway chef Jess Reale cooked up a feast to remember. Amid goat taquitos, Caribbean lobster salad, hand-made ravioli, and chocolate goat-cheese cake a selection of fine wines from Prestige Wine was poured.

As if that wasn’t enough, it was a beautiful evening of light winds and a true Crucian sunset. Tonight’s sail was one in a series of four events with varying menus–all showcasing Roseway’s awesome chef as well as raising funds for the World Ocean School.

It was a glorious way to end the season in St. Croix — old friends, new friends, good food, and a great sail!

May 3: World Ocean School Wins Maritime Education Award

Logged on Monday May 3, 2010

Education Coordinator, Eden Leonard, was thrilled to accept on behalf of World Ocean School, the award for Best Maritime Education in the Virgin Islands. The award comes from the Reader’s Choice polls of the Daily News and is an annual award. While there certainly are not a lot of maritime education programs in the Virgin Islands, there are a few and we are happy to be noted among them.

The educational program season in St. Croix is wrapping up but so far has served over 700 island students through the public school seventh-grade program as well as programs for various grades at other public and private island schools. After four years of serving students in St. Croix,  Roseway programs are becoming more well known and the demand for them is growing. Next year we hope to keep improving the work we are  doing and continue to live up to the award we’ve been giving.
