The World Ocean School is an internationally focused nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing challenging educational programs aboard the schooner Roseway.
From November to May, Roseway operates in the Southern U.S. and the Caribbean providing a platform for curriculum integrated programs serving students of all ages.
For the past six years World Ocean School has served over 4,000 local island students throughout the Virgin Islands. We have a proven track record in providing an academic curriculum at sea for grades 5-12. The programs serve 25 students aboard the ship for one-day or multi-day trips integrating the historic sailing experience to math, science, English, and social studies. We welcome school groups and youth organizations on board either for dockside learning experiences or sailing expeditions.
World Ocean School provides a platform for education aboard the historic landmark schooner Roseway, ideal for college J-term or traveling break programs. Our adventures are based in the Virgin Islands from November to May. Here we offer a platform for students to experience the beauty and inspiration of sailing Roseway through Caribbean waters, bringing academics and community-building to life. Whether in English, History, Science or another applicable area of study, an academic-based program can be tailored to accommodate specific lessons linked with nautical studies and life aboard our historic tall ship.
Roseway can accommodate up to sixteen students and two professors or staff. While we recommend at least ten days, programs can run for one week to one month.
Any academic topic in the Sciences, Arts, or Humanities can form the basis of a maritime program aboard Roseway. Our education topics can then be integrated based on the structure of the course. Our core topics typically include journaling and reflecting, navigation, sail theory, maritime history, and basic seamanship. Each student will be fully immersed in the authentic experience of life aboard as a crew member including boat checks, ship chores, standing anchor watch, climbing the rig, and refining maritime skills.
