July 14: Project YESS – Watch B Ship’s Log

DATE: July 13, 2010

TIME: 1900

Casey climbed the rig of the Roseway all the way to the top, Augustina climed the rig about halfway to the top, and Nick climbed 2 steps up the rig today. The view was excellent from up on the rig, you could see Canada and the United States. You could see the roads on the United States, and the Canadian Side of the land, and you could see other tall ships, “Pride of Baltimore”, “Dennis Sullivan”, “Bounty”, small and personal boats, and carriers flowing down the Detroit River. We got up at around 4-5 o’ clock for anchor watch to hoist the anchor back onto the boat. Anchor watch is nice because you can watch the sun rise, watch the stars in the sky, and you get up from the heat inside the boat where they slept. On watch, we actually steer the boat on the helm, check the boat and see if there are any problems on the boat, or we lookout over the bow for oncoming boats or other obstacles. Afterwards, we learned about knots, and practiced them on deck with the other ship mates. Now, we have dropped out of the St. Clair river, and we are making our way through Lake Huron. We also went through Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair. The food on the boat is amazing, and it’s very easy to sleep with the slight movement of the boat, and full stomachs.
