Camille McKayle
Camille A. McKayle, PhD, is Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), having previously served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and Professor of Mathematics. Dr. McKayle has a deep commitment to quality education. Immediately after arriving at UVI in 1996, she, along with collaborators, authored and received a grant to integrate more technology in the teaching of mathematics. Her goal is always to find ways to better engage and excite students in the classroom. She went on to develop an after-school program for sixth grade girls called Girls Excited About Math Stuff (GEMS), a program for third through twelfth grade students, MathLab, and a program for sixth and seventh grade boys, Junior University, among others.
Camille has served as principal investigator (PI) and project director for various grant projects at the university that aimed to strengthen the quality of the preparation in science and mathematics for students at UVI, as well as students in K-12 Virgin Islands schools. The overall goal of those efforts was increasing the number of students that became and remained interested in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines and ultimately choose to enter into the STEM workforce. More recently, Camille serves as PI for three National Science Foundation projects: The Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership; UVI’s HBCU-Undergraduate Program ACE Implementation project; and Florida-Caribbean Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Regional Center of Excellence (collaborative with Santa Fe College). Together, these programs aim to broaden participation in the Nation’s STEM enterprise through focus on undergraduate STEM education, especially for those students from groups underrepresented in STEM fields.
Dr. McKayle received her Ph.D. in Mathematics, from Lehigh University) and holds a BS in Mathematics from Bates College. She recently completed a Master’s Certificate in Creativity and Change Leadership from Buffalo State College’s International Center for Creativity Studies. Camille, a mathematician by training, has devoted her professional career to creating avenues for students to realize their educational dreams. She is delighted to serve on the WOS board, which she sees as an extension of her work for students. Her other passions include spending time with family, including her spouse, fellow mathematician Robert Stolz, and two adult children who grew up on St. Thomas and have the Roseway as part of their fond memories from time at the VI Montessori School and International Academy. Camille is also a board member there.
