Norfolk to Charleston (Day 5)
10/26
We started the morning with hearty breakfast. Thank you once again Chad. With winds looking promising for the day, we were given the OK to climb the mast to the cross trees. Over 80% of the volunteer crew make the journey to to top. What a view of the harbor from above. The early morning winds built adding challenges to the day ahead.
Anchors away was next, after the overnight, anchored just outside Charleston Harbor we anticipated the later morning workout of hauling back the anchor. And what a workout it was. Not only the team effort on the battens of the windlass, but the task of getting the anchor secure was a marvel to behold. The impressive skills and genius of the crew to bring the anchor from the water and lash it to the rail was an engineering feat itself.
Proceeding through Charleston Harbor with visions of being dockside by noon, our hopes were soon dashed. With the winds rising. we made special boat preparations so not to damage boat or dock. With no hope of reaching dockside anytime soon, ……..Anchors away….again. And everyone was thinking the same things….. we’ll have to haul back the anchor….again.
Though we are anchored and within three quarters of a mile of our intended dock we are closer to the Charleston bridge and have for as I would imaging a once in a lifetime view for the night. Stay tuned.
