Advanced Summer Ambassador Program (Day 6)

Written by Isejah, Esmeralda, Luis, Zaria, and Amare.

Our Friday was spent on a shore excursion in New Bedford visiting the world-renowned New Bedford Whaling Museum and doing an art walk through town. The weather today was the most pleasant we’ve had in a while, sunny and warm with a nice breeze. Some of our favorite pieces from the art walk were Sea Flower by James Surls and the Blue Man Holding Heart by an unknown artist. A fun fact from the whaling museum was that up to one third of the oil that can be harvested from a whale is stored as solidified deposits within the whale's bones. These reserves function similarly to a camel's hump and provide nutrients to the whale in times of scarcity or migration. KOBO(King of the Blue Ocean), a 4-6 year old blue whale who was killed by a ship strike in the 2000s and whose skeleton is on display at the museum, has been slowly dripping oil for the past twenty years and scientists estimate that he will continue to do so at least until 2060. We ended the day with an ice cream stop which was awesome! Now that hurricane Erin has passed, we’ll be sailing to a place called Scraggy Neck tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll get a beach day.
