Boy Scouts (Day 2)
Ship’s Log written by Boy Scout troop members.
July 14, 2025
Our day began well before the sun rose. In hour-long shifts, we took turns in small groups holding anchor watches. This interruption to our sleep turned out to be a pleasant surprise, both educational and enjoyable. Throughout the day we continued to learn so much more about sailing, teamwork, and the thrill of new experiences. Our ship’s cook kept all souls well fed, our top favorites today included wonderful bread pudding, lasagna soup, and a taco bar with all the fixings. Our learning opportunities today included manning the helm, calculating nautical miles, and reading the charts. On deck, our group got to learn and practice all manners of hands-on sailing operations: from raising the anchor with the windlass, running systems checks with the crew, entering the weather and navigation data in our logs, and raising and lowering both flags and sails. After we anchored this evening near Provincetown, Mass, in Cape Cod Bay, we capped the day off with a refreshing dip in the drink. This has been a thorough educational experience, holistically capturing, in a short amount of time, so much nautical knowledge. Tomorrow we hope adventures might include a bit of seeing sea life, as we continue to learn and grow as novice sailors!
