This morning, The captain fixed the winless! it broke yersterday, but he fixed it like a pro! I have absolutely no clue who woke us up this morning, but the boat was Suuuuuper rocky and there was next to no wind, so we were just stuck dealing with being inside of a cocoa puffs comercial (because the rocking had us bouncing off the walls). on a more important note, MORE WHALES!!! not too important, but like, everyone loves seeing whales, and we got to see those and a mola mola. The mola mola actually scared a few people who thought it was a shark because its fin surfaced and it looked like one, but it’s not a shark in any way, shape, or form! During the rotations today, we split into two groups where some of us did boat checks and the others worked on an almanac (just some research, not anything fancy), featuring both engineering and whales. We had a rather quick lunch afterwards, but we hightailed it to the shoals marine lab in Maine. The island we went on was very strict about letting nature do it’s thing, so they only made a few trails and tried to take up the smallest amount of space and while making the smallest possible imapct on the life on the island, leaving living things like poison ivy and seaguls alone. The employees on the island also offers classes to people both in highschool and college, featuring short-term courses that offer college credits to learn more about various types of marine life and animals around the island, and one of the crew members aboard the Denis Sulivan actually went to school there too! There was also a really cool cabin on the island, burnt down, but the garden around it still remained and it looked amazing, packed full of beautiful flowers. Also! we were taught that birds are less likely to fly into wind turbines if you paint one of the blades black! Moving on from Shoals, we also did swim call today! we just went into the ocean to swim (with life jackets) and saw some jellyfish! later though, we’ll be doing a little talent show-like event called Swizzle!
