A Busy Season in St. Croix

February 6, 2026

The crew of the Denis Sullivan has been hard at work since wrapping up 2025! We are in full swing of our education season here in St Croix, while also rounding out our schedule with weekly maintenance and beautiful sunset sails around the island. This week, we touched up our green hull paint, hunkered down for an entire day of rain, and brought aboard our first weeklong day program of 2026! We welcomed the 6th grade class of Good Hope Country Day School. All came aboard to roam our decks, hoist our sails, and share our values. We had two beautiful days of sailing, where the students saw the full range of what these near shores can offer. Our first sail was an adventurous one! Waves crashed on the side of the ship, sea spray kissed our faces, and the students got to try on their sea legs (many of them for the very first time!) We spent the next day dockside, and sent everyone aloft to skylark and truly appreciate the scope of Denis Sullivan’s rigging. We finished the week out with another sail, this one in a picturesque, calm sea. It was perfect for the big activity of the day: sending everyone out on the headrig! The students got to harness up and climb out along the bowsprit while we sailed tranquilly along. The students walked away with stories to tell, knowledge to spread (they were all very excited to teach me what makes the ocean blue!), and teamwork skills that they can continue building for the rest of their lives. Finally, the ship had the honor of hosting many of World Ocean School’s wonderful donors and board members to share a lovely sunset sail with us towards the end of the week. It is such a delight to shake hands with everyone who keeps this piece of history (and promise of the future) sailing along.
