Landmark College: Day 4

January 11, 2026

We woke up with the sun, an hour early aka 06:00 to haul back the anchor. The anchor came up super quickly despite being covered in mud. Once the sun was up and we were underway we started in on our morning chores, for us that was deck wash. Despite the rolling sea pummeling the ship causing it to roll and pitch like crazy and making us all a bit queasy, we all worked together to get chores done. We did morning rotations where we learned about parts of the headsails such as the luff or clew. We had lunch set up in the tumultuous conditions but still delivered build your own tacos with yellow and orange gatorade. We reached St. Thomas and set sail as we turned towards St. Croix. On our way we caught another barracuda. After lunch we took a break and then started afternoon rotations where we went out on to the headrig and demonstrated more skills to our deckhands. To finish out the day we dropped anchor back at St. Croix and had the amazing opportunity to go aloft. Getting to see the island from such an amazing perspective was really mind boggling. We were sad that we did not get to go snorkeling but will hopefully be able to go tomorrow before we head back to shore. As our journey on the Denis Sullivan comes to a close we now realize the amount of effort that goes into running a tall ship and all the little luxuries we take for granted on shore. Going forward we will take with us the both big and small lessons we learned here on the big blue sea.
