Ashley Hall (Day 3)

April 3, 2026

Last night on our 0000-0400 we cleaned soles and bowls as our chore. This was our first 4 hour watch. We learned a lot for our future watches. Our second watch was 1200-1600. We cleaned the galley from lunch where Leighton, Sallie, and Alex learned to navigate. After that we rested, had dinner, and prepared for our 2000 to 0000 watch, which we are currently in. We just finished watching bioluminescent plankton after seeing them for the first time this trip. Most of our current watch was spent identifying stars and constellations with Dr. Davis. Ireland and Leighton identified Castor and Pollux as well as their conjoining planet Jupiter. We have all learned to operate the helm, taking control of the ship. Ireland says we have all new friends or better friends with unexpected people and I always look forward to mid-rats. While we had trouble last night due to the intense wind we ultimately had a good experience and connection. All of us continue despite hardship which has taught us to appreciate the experience and each other. Minka has thrown up the most but has recovered after each one, therefore highlighting our determination and bond as a watch group. We saw a humpback whale breaching and blowing as well as dolphins off the bow of the boat. It was amazing to see these brilliant creatures fully immersed in nature.

Love,

Leighton, Ireland, Minka, Alex, Sallie, and Jocelyn
