Today was a very special day because we went ashore for an adventure in Provincetown or P-Town, Massachusetts. We began the day by packing and getting dressed for our outing. Once everyone was shuttled onto the dock we were greeted by a seal, named Jack, according to a local fisherman. It was very curious and friendly and many students were able to get a good picture of its cute face. The students then began exploring the entrance of P-Town and were given the opportunity to buy things at the boutiques and small businesses of their choice. Afterwards, we walked over to the Whalers Wharf with the intention of exploring a discovery center only to realize it was closed. Then it was time for lunch where we ate the sandwiches and various snacks we packed earlier in the morning. This switched our day around and gave the students an extra hour of time to continue shopping in a larger area of P-Town. The town was beautiful and students enjoyed buying clothes, small souvenirs like necklaces and sweet treats including fried dough and cotton candy. To continue our journey we were given the opportunity to go into the Center of Coastal Studies where we were given a presentation regarding whales, their threats and encounters with fishing equipment entanglements. We even got to go into the lab designated to help endangered whales and smaller sea creatures. The visit was important and taught us a lot about the ocean and whale identification. The best part was a real full body skeleton of a humpback whale named Spinicker. To end the day we headed to a small ice cream shop where everyone got to pick their own flavors including some fan favorites like caramel heath, vanilla, coffee and mint chip. This concluded our tour and visit to P-Town. Once we were back aboard we enjoyed some delicious beef or squid tacos. After dinner students began prepping for the schooner olympics where we get the opportunity to show off all of our skills we have learned this trip. The schooner olympics include: knot tying, coiling lines and so much more. Everyone is so excited and eager for this amazing and fun competition.
