Today we sailed from our anchorage outside the Provincetown breakwater across Cape Cod and through the Cape Cod canal. It was a much smoother ride than yesterday because of the sheltering effect of the cape. The Denis Sullivan is a very popular ship, we draw crowds and admiration everywhere we go. Our bunks are surprisingly comfortable, the combination of the sea rocking us and the quietness of the night puts us to sleep like we’re babies. Doing chores on the boat doesn’t feel like chores, rather a friendly sports competition where the entire crew is on the same team working towards one goal. We’re currently anchored at Wood's Hole in Buzzard’s Bay. The bay is rather calm and the seas are light. Before we ate dinner we showered which is very different from showering normally. Rather than just standing under a shower head, some of us dove into the sea and swam around. We played games with a beach ball and then came on deck to sop up. Another quick jump and we were squeaky clean. For dinner we had jambalaya which was delicious. Tomorrow we will sail for New Bedford to find safe harbor from Hurricane Erin. We all feel like true crew members as our trip progresses, our improving knowledge and skills give us confidence, a sense of camaraderie, and real enjoyment in everything we do. Looking forward to everything tomorrow will bring(shore excursion), Denis Sullivan crew.
