Advanced Summer Ambassador Program (Day 4)

Written by Mason, Sophia, Alexis, and Wyatt.

August 20: Today we ventured ashore. After a night anchored in Buzzard’s Bay close to Wood’s Hole, we took the red power boat to the shore in shifts and walked into town. There we went to the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) and listened to a presentation about who they are and what they do. Turns out WHOI was the group to find the Titanic, and have swapped it with the sister ship, the HMHS Britannic. After the presentation, we ate our packed lunches on a nearby hill; PB&J, cheese and ham, fruit, nuts, etc. Upon finishing our mid-day meal, we explored Wood’s Hole in groups of three. In fact, much of A Watch remained together as we visited axolotls in a visitor center, got a postcard, and promptly mailed it. ICE CREAM! NOW IT WAS TIME FOR ICE CREAM! We regrouped at an ice cream shoppe, and all purchased scoops on World Ocean School’s dime. Most of us chose mint over coffee adjacent flavours. Consensus; mint is better. Mason and Sophia disagree. Vivian does not. After ice cream, we made haste to the aquarium and saw a boat load of fish. There was a seal, a real seal, not the Navy kind. It rained, and the sad seal was named Bubba. We waited for Captain Greg Terry to retrieve us at the beach, and shortly after the rain picked up, we all arrived, in one piece, at the ship. Half of the group went into the hold to dry off, whilst the rest of us jumped into the boundless and salty Atlantic! All dry, we mustered for dinner, which was pasta with broccoli and chicken. Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum! Wait. Hold the Log Book. Wyatt isn’t here! We all peer over the edge of the boat, and lo and behold! A giant squid has dragged Wyatt by his luscious locks, bound for Jean Le Stinkfoot’s lair! Captain Greg wasn’t quick enough, and we watched in horror as the leviathan slipped through his fingers and into the horizon. Will Alexis be the hero and brave the deep to save him??? Or will he perish in this mysterious abyss, lost forever??? Tune in in three days to find out!
