Winter Ambassador Voyage: Day 2

Dec 28, 2025:

We had an early morning today, with the crew waking up at 7 am to get us off our mooring and on course to Culebra. Us students woke up shortly after, starting up our chores and breakfast (which was huevos rancheros and fruit). Not long after, we were put to work to put up the main sail, which sped us up a little bit and kept the ship from rolling too much. Afterwards, we went over our station bill with the captain and mate, which is our procedure and roles in various emergencies on board like MOB, fire, and abandon ship. We ran through a man overboard drill and successfully rescued our fallen fender. Our next task was learning line handling onboard (how to make a working coil, ballantine, belay to a pin, and hanging a coil). Lunch followed which was very great (soup and bread!) More sails were raised: the mizzen, fore, and staysail. This was also the day we began our regular afternoon rotations, starting with R&R (rest and recovery) and moving into lessons. With today’s navigation lesson, we learned a large amount about charts and basic nav. A few of us got to take the helm today. Daniel enjoyed it since he could watch the surrounding scenes and feel like he was being useful. Mycal got to drive us into our anchorage. Today Quinn had a very good time, he enjoyed going through the rotations while we sailed along. He was pushed to learn a lot between line handling and coiling, but is pleased to announce that he has mastered the ballantine. We had a great day and ended it with a swim call and mac and cheese at anchor, just off of the southwest shore of Culebra.
